I will be taking the position the H.O.G.® Experience Manager for the Iberian Peninsula, looking after Spain and Portugal. You guys make it difficult and sad for me to leave - I will never forget the great friendships, the wonderful riding roads, rallies and events all over the country with lots of dancing, helpful and supporting Harley-Davidson® dealers and a wonderful team at H-D® Africa. You will all be sorely missed! What comforts me is knowing that you will be in very good hands with Luis Da Silva, who takes over the Southern African Region, in addition to his responsibilities in the Middle East and North African Regions.Luis has more than 20 years’ experience and has taken part in the launch of many of the SSA Harley Owners Group® Chapters, rallies and memorable events in this region. He was a chapter volunteer for over ten years, and served for two years as a Chapter Director. On top of this, he is one of the best Skills Rider Trainers I know! My email will remain the same and I will be happy to hear from you guys. If anyone is coming over to the Peninsular, let me know so we can organise a memorable riding tour through Spain & Portugal.See you on the road!Sue Nagel Luis da SilvaWell, I would firstly like to thank you, Sue. We have known each other for many of my 20 years’ with Harley-Davidson and Harley Owners Group. You have done a great job in this region, and treated it like your own home. I am happy to see that your dream and wishes are being realized in your return home to the Iberian Peninsula.I am thrilled to be back with the region where my life-long passion for Harley-Davidson and H.O.G. began. We all have a life event that has marked and moulded us into who we are. Mine happened 21 years ago when I acquired my first Harley-Davidson motorcycle. It was a gleaming black 1996 Softail® Custom bought from Leigh Haarhoff - the sales lady at the time for H-D Johannesburg. Then in 1998 I joined H.O.G. Johannesburg, and my H.O.G. volunteering days began. I can assure you all, I have enjoyed every single day since then, riding with chapters across Africa and the Middle East. Wow!! Feels like just the other day. I’m looking forward to meeting, working and sharing this wonderful passion and experience with my H.O.G. family and all Harley-Davidson dealers and enthusiasts in this region. See you all soon!Luis da SilvaFarewell Sue Welcome Luis1HOGAFRICA NEWS“2Photography credits: Angelique DermitAnnemarie Wheeler Diana Amaro Dieter Wiese Jonty Marais Jose Rebordao Mike De KockInter-chapter Games 2018Inter-chapter Games 2018 See the full gallery on the websiteCongratulations to winning Chapter - H.O.G. CAPE TOWN CAPE SEAL RALLY HERMANUS“The Blessing of the Bikes” was officiated by the colourful local Anglican priest. The Rally Site was at historic Gearings Point where everyone relaxed, swapped bike stories, shopped and chilled.Cape Seal Rally 20174At the end of 2017, the Cape Town Chapter hosted its 3rd annual Cape Seal Rally in Hermanus, the heart of the Whale Coast. It was a huge success with 200 Harley-Davidson riders attending. In addition to riders from many South African H.O.G.® Chapters, we enjoyed the company of a large contingent from H.O.G. Oxford Chapter in the UK as well from Qatar. A huge thank you to our sponsors for the Rally Bag filled with goodies - including a cool collector’s item Rally T-Shirt, flask, pen-set, vouchers, something sweet, a bit of “Jack” and much more! SEE THE FULL ARTICLE + EXTRA PHOTOS www.HOGAfrica.comWhat makes the Cape Seal Rally stand out is that H.O.G. Cape Town Chapter members made a concerted effort to spend time with the homeless during the 4 days of the rally. During these four days we had some great live entertainment from local bands Tuxedo and Ocean’s Rift. From Ocean View, Cape Talk, KFM and West Coast Radio all supported the rally with superb media coverage. They were thrilled to publicise the events of our Cape Seal Rally and freely broadcast on social media. The Hermanus Youth BandThe Hermanus Youth Band, a talented youth group from the area officially opened the rally at 17:00 on Friday. This was an opportunity to showcase their musical talent and skills. The Youth Band is a project of the Hermanus Academy of Music (HAM), which brings music education to schools within the disadvantaged communities of the Overstrand and Overberg Regions. The Academy provides accredited music tuition for young adolescents through targeted training initiatives, learner ships, bursaries and public performances. HAM students have won a number of awards over the past four years.Charity Cheque HandoverH.O.G. Cape Town Chapter returned to Hermanus at the end of January 2018 for the cheque handover to the official Rally Charity - Hermanus Night Shelter Association. A generous R35 000 was collected from Rally registrations, sponsorships, donations from businesses and individuals. The Association was established almost a decade ago by a group of concerned citizens who identified the need for a shelter for the homeless of Hermanus. The donation from H.O.G. Cape Town Chapter and the rally participants will assist to build a new shelter for the homeless and vulnerable.5Cape Seal Rally 2017READ THE FULL ARTICLE + EXTRA PHOTOS AT WWW.HOGAFRICA.COM!SUPPORTING LOCAL communitIEScontinued from page 4The West Coast is known for its fresh fish, quaint fishing villages and pristine beaches. But in October 2017, the roar of the waves made way for a different kind of thunder as 700 Harley-Davidson enthusiasts arrived in Lambert’s Bay. On the Friday, a poker ride offered attendees the opportunity to explore a variety of interesting places and watering holes in the area. One of the stops was to the rally charity “Huis van Liefde” for a cheque handover. Another visit was to Somerkoelte Home for the Aged, where 101 year-old Mrs JC Gripp was treated to a ride through town on the back of a Harley®. Local artists and popular band The Rockets entertained participants late into the night. On Saturday, a mass ride left from the natural harbour and snaked along the scenic coastline all the way to neighbouring town Elands Bay. Here the braver members of the riding fraternity showed their mettle in the Harley Games®.The weekend’s events culminated in Saturday night’s Gala Dinner at Die Muisbosskerm, a unique world-class open-air restaurant right on the beach.West Coast rally 20186H.O.G. Our hard-working committee put their heads together and conjured the brilliant idea of bringing together V-Twins and actual horse power! In perfect weather conditions, the two hour outride took us along the awesome curvy roads in the Chamarel Region to Peninsula Le Morne - a World Heritage Site. All participants were then given the opportunity to ride on horseback. Kicking up a fine spray of white Mauritian beach sand under hoof, the horses galloped playfully across the beach and waded into the warm water of the Indian Ocean. For many of the chapter members this was their first horseback riding experience and based on the smiles on everyone’s faces, it was a truly unforgettable experience! Over a delicious paella lunch, we compared the V-Twin with actual horsepower. Each inspires feelings of a close relationship, respect and passion. Both can be temperamental and need a relaxed body posture and soft touch to throttle or rein. As you ride, you feel the vibration run through you, and enjoy sense of raw power.RIDE THE ISLANDS: H.O.G.
