Night Ride reportback - Fireman's Tavern

Organising Chapter:

  • Chapter Social Event

A benefit of being a H.O.G. Member is that one gets to experience events that are totally out of the norm. One of such is the favourite Night Ride to the Firemans Tavern in Modderfontein. Directors Dean Addeson - H.O.G. Johannesburg Chapter and Ian Habib – H.O.G. Clearwater Chapter discussed mutually beneficial rides for Chapters in spirit of bringing the members together more regularly.

Due to rush hour traffic and the trip in darkness Clearwater marshals had their work cut out with a thorough safety briefing and reflective strips for all riders and admirable performance of their duties in getting the pack safely to the meeting point.

Traffic constraints for various Chapters to arrive and join with Clearwater resulted in late arrival but once lined up behind the fire engine with flashing lights to escort the pack to Firemans Tavern all foot tapping and time watching was forgotten. Firemen accompanied the Harley-Davidson® Motorcycles by leading the fire engine on motorcycles of their own (Not Harley-Davidson® models unfortunately) but their involvement never the less was much appreciated. Harley Owners Group® Chapters Johannesburg, Zambezi, Gold Rand and Clearwater bringing up the rear with a massive pack of participants. Hilda De Bruyn photographer for Zambezi Chapter posted a video of 150 Harley-Davidson motorcycles on route to the venue on their website.

The Modderfontein Fire Department used approximately 10 000 litres of contaminated aviation fuel from OR Thambo airport to set alight the massive steel structure demonstrating the dousing of buildings on fire. Volunteers were offered a quick crash course on fire fighting after being suited up; members who decided to make a family outing of the event brought their children along, for these youngsters it was an experience to remember when they were suited with their own fire retardant gear and helmets and shown the ropes.

Burnout at Firemans Tavern proof a very spectacular and enjoyable evening, a growing favourite Night Ride to remember. Ian stated the event is most certainly yet again listed for next year and all Chapters are welcome to join.
