Clarens - the Jewel of the Eastern Free State
The 1903 Rally takes place in Clarens, a small town nicknamed the "Jewel of the Eastern Free State” nestled in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains in the Free State. Founded in 1912, the settlement shares the name of the town in Switzerland where exiled Paul Kruger spent his last days. Clarens is a farming and art community surrounded by natural beauty and magestic sandstone rock formations.
1903 Rally HQ is the gracious Clarens Protea Hotel - the venue for all Rally activities. This luxurious four-star retreat is nestled in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains in close proximity to the Golden Gate National Park and the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. Protea Hotel Clarens exudes sheer style inside, with a rustic exterior design that blends in with the natural splendour of Clarens. It is a convenient and centrally located home base to explore this tranquil, magical landscape. The hotel takes special pride in its warm hospitality.
Rolling works of art!
The Rally commences on Friday afternoon with an awesome display of customised Harley-Davidson® motorcycles in the Concourse de Elegance at the Rally HQ (Protea Hotel Clarens). Official judging will take place at 16:00 and the winners will be announced at the evening dinner.
Throughout the rally there will be various stalls at the Hotel selling Harley Goodies and "bling" for the themed gala dinner. Harley-Davidson Gold Rand Dealership will also be exhibiting the latest Harley-Davidson bikes, accessories and clothing. If you so wish, the new 2018 Harley-Davidson® motorcycles will be made available for Test Rides on Saturday.
Join the Tortoise Tour
The fun and action continues on Saturday morning (10 February) when the riders will start the 35 km “Tortoise Tour” to Fouriesburg at their own pace. Full details on all events and activities will be included in the Rally Program you will receive upon arrival at the Protea Hotel in Clarens.
The tour will end at the Fouriesburg Country Inn where the General Manager William Horner will welcome all with a light lunch (included in your Rally fee). Fouriesburg is in the scenic Brandwater Basin, surrounded by the Maluti, Rooiberg and Witteberg mountain ranges, on the border of Lesotho. Named after Christoffel Fourie, on whose farm Groenfontein the town of Fouriesburg was established in the year 1892. During the Anglo Boer War, it was declared the capital of the Orange Free State Republic – a proclamation yet to be rescinded!
Charity ride - Vultures Football Club
No rally is complete without a donation to a worthy local Charity. After lunch the Rally delegates will visit the FC Vultures from Mashaeng, Eastern Free State. The club run by Sakkie Pheleu is a dedicated football club with the mission to instill discipline and teamwork in its young players, encouraging the youth to focus on fitness and wellbeing rather than taking to the streets.
The afternoon will be left free for you to explore this magical Eastern Freestate. The Lesotho border is just a few kilometres away from Fouriesburg for those who wish to visit the Kingdom of Lesotho (remember to bring your passport). There is also the option of doing the ninety kilometres round trip, thirty to Fouriesburg, thirty to Bethlehem and thirty back to Clarens. But, whatever you wish to do, relaxing, riding or exploring the Eastern Free State is awesome.See below for local attractions.
Dinner - it's time to get your "bling" on!
Saturday evening procedures will start at 18:00, there will be a “Happy Hour” at the bar from 18:00 to 19:00 followed by the evening agenda, starting off with a Buffet Dinner. Prize giving will also be held during the dinner process. Jurrie Nel of Dj Dragon a very well-known DJ at Harley events will ensure there will be lots of good music and entertainment for the evening.
The Gala theme for the evening will be Gold Bling in celebration of the 1903 Rally and the 115 years of manufacturing of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Dress to celebrate a brand that is synonymous with fun, friendship, freedom and lending a helping hand to others in need. The choice is yours to get your bling on, or keep it casual.
